Virtual Annual Training Conference 2022 – Event 2

The second event in our 2022 webinar series which will take place at 13:00 on Wednesday 13th April is titled ‘Fire Investigation, from an Art to a Science’ presented by John Galvin of Fire Investigations UK.

Having trained as an aeronautical engineer (electrical systems & avionics) John moved into engineering research and development before joining the London Fire Brigade in 1981.

Whilst employed in the fire service (for over 30 years) John has carried out various roles in the Operational, Training and Command directorates before becoming a member of the Fire Investigation Team in 1995.

Since then, as a full-time fire investigator, John has been the lead investigator for over 2000 incidents including 40 fatal fires and has supported the lead investigator on many more. He has also given expert witness testimony at the Old Bailey and at Crown and Coroners Courts. He has investigated fires in the UK and overseas. John has accumulated over 25 years of FI experience.

John has attained a BSc (Hons) Technology where he studied subjects relating to materials, material behaviour and aspects of forensic engineering. He is an Incorporated Engineer and holds diplomas in Design and Pollution Control.

He is a member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers and sits on the IFE Fire Investigation Special Interest Group and is Vice Chair of the IFE Engineering Council Registrants Group.

John is a Past President and Fellow of the UK Association of Fire Investigators and acts as an examiner for the IAAI Certified Fire Investigator programme. John was one of the first IAAI-CFI’s in the UK.

John has acted as a consultant to the film and TV industry working closely with special effects units on productions in studios and on location. In this role he has been able to set, monitor the development of and extinguish many fires in different situations.

John is the Director of Training and an Associate of Fire Investigations (UK) LLP.
